Artistic Integrity: Basil Wolverton

I was probably in the fifth or sixty grade, with an intense case of ADD I always had extremely random paroxysms, art (drawing mainly) was really the only thing that could calm me down. ( Thank God I grew out of it). I remember being assigned a project by my art teacher. The task was to do a report about your favorite artist, and try your best to redraw or paint one of their works. I didn't really have a favorite so I had to do some research, when I took a visit to the library..I found gold.

To a kid like me at my age this book was heaven. Mr. Wolverton's style of art would have probably left many kids in fear, but I was really astounded and thought it was the coolest shit in the world. I went home and finished my project. My teacher that i was a little crazy and didn't think it checked out until i brought the book to her.

Basil Wolverton was born in Central Point Oregon on July 9th, 1909. His work first appeared in the 1950s he did he few inside panels and covers for them. Wolverton's pieces are very abstract and extraordinary, and I personally think they are amazing pieces. Some are a little over the top to the point where it gets a little scary. I like how he makes the pieces this way it really makes him stand out as an artist.

Recently, Stussy did a collaboration and dedication project by releasing tees with some of his most famous works on them. I was actually excited about the collab because he was already my favorite artist so i had to get tee. These are some of my favorite pieces by Basil Wolverton and the collab with Stussy. I hope to own one of his original pieces someday.

I leave you with some of my favorite pieces by him....
